The area is declared as a geological nature reserve with the main purpose of protecting its flora and fauna. Ponta de São Lourenço is volcanic in original and a unique combination of rocks, sea and nature.
There is a distinct feature such as world’s scarcest seal, known in Madeira as a Sea-wolf. On the perspective to the South you can see the Desertas Islands and the Porto Santo Island - to the North.
If you love the nature of coastline, this is the place you belong. The reserve extends to 23 km and is made of the three islands: Ilhéu do Chão, Deserta Grande and Bugio.
The coastline is of volcanic origin, with dominating reddish and yellowish ashes. The reserve is the last refuge for a colony wolf marine in estimated, to sum up to 23 animals. The number is expected to increase in future. The Desertas Islands were appointed as a biogenetic reserve in 1992. The objective is to protect and preserve all wildlife and unique, rare species, a wide variation of plants. Underwater fishing is strictly prohibited. A stop over and visit is possible at Deserta Grande Island, but only with a written authorization from the Madeira Natural Park.
